I THOUGHT I SAW MYSELF

I thought I saw myself today

Twenty years on

Sitting at a nearby table in a Bohemian restaurant

He had Whitmanesque white hair

A flowing white beard

He embraced the nubile waitress with a smile and eyes I recognized

Warmth that she obliquely deflected

And when his eyes met mine I was both attracted and repelled

Not yet ready to take the chair that seemed to await me
